The rise and fall of Infinity Ward 22.10.09 20:15
Well we all have heard the stories, we've all heard the rumours and we've all seen the posts. So what has Infinity ward actually decided upon with the new direction of Call of Duty: modern Warfare 2?
Well if anyone has been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you will know that IW has decided that Dedicated Servers are no longer needed for the PC version. The excuses given range from Piracy to "helping out the casual gamer".
AS most of you know, these are no more than PC lies, hoping to get the PC community on their side. As most also know, this has backfired completely and has been the talking point for not just the CoD community but throughout the gaming industry.
Before I go any further, I will explain what they are saying and why they are lying.
To set the tone of this article, here's is a few quotes from IWs CEO Jason West.
As you can see, he has no respect for the communities that have built up around the CoD franchise. in fact, he is down right hostile towards them. Even to the point of saying we are the people responsible for making the legitimate CoD player from not playing multiplayer.
I'm sure you are all well aware how fare from the truth his statements are and how arrogant he is coming across.
So what is it that they are actually after? Do they really hate the CoD community that much that they would destroy i over night?
Well the answer to all of that is DLC (Downloadable content).
Without dedicated servers to get in the way, IW can now charge people to play new maps. This source of revenue has been on the Xbox and PS3 for years. Now IW want this on the PC too. You can't blame them, they are a business and like any buiness, they want to make money. Lots of money.
So without dedicated servers, they no longer have the problem of user made maps and mods that would persuade people not to pay for the DLC.
This is where the problem now lies for clans. What to do, where to go and what will happen.
Clans rely on servers. They shape the way the server works, they decide on the maturity of the players who play there and they choose whether there is a modded server or non modded (in most cases multiple servers catering for a large audience of player). They welcome people on the servers and those new players feel part of the community.
Some will stay, some will leave for a different character of server but in the end, all the PC players will find a set of servers they like. They will bond with the people on them and in some cases join the server community or clan and even help with the payments or donation to keep the server going.
This is all gone.
Now it's a clinical sterile environment on a game hosted on peoples home PCs. Racism, glitching, cheating will be prevalent throughout. The lag from will be unplayable, people will never meet knew people. The game will, for choice of a better word, suck.
We know piracy has never been an issue on multiplayer, we know that server browsing has never been a problem, we know there is not a problem with the clan culture or community servers, we know that there is nothing wrong with playing on 32 man servers with a different skill range. IW, would like you to think there is. They would like you to think p2p gaming is a way forward, they would like you to think Punkbuster is crap, yet Valves anticheat is great. They would even like you to think that playing a 5v5 based on Rank is going to give you a evenly balanced game.
It's all lies.
So IW, To coin a paraphrase from a euro MP in regards to your lies.
"You know, We know and you know that we know you are lying."
So please stop telling us you are destroying our community for the betterment of it. Stop with the PR and tell it straight.
It's all about the money.
